Have you ever been to a buffet style restaurant? At these places they have many different foods and desserts that you can choose from. Rather than ordering one entree, you can fill your plate with more of the foods you really like and leave what you don’t.
There are many people who treat the Bible in this manner. They feed on lots of scripture which they agree with or which makes them feel good, but when it comes to scriptures which speak against their sin they overlook it. Before I became a born-again Christian I often did this. I believed that the Bible was the Word of God and that it was all true, however I would choose for myself scriptures which pertained to my success in life and somehow overlook the scriptures which spoke against my sins. Even though I prayed and spoke scripture over my life, I didn’t see the promises of God in the Bible happen for me until I received His Word entirely and turned from my ways which contradicted the scriptures.
If you want the Word of God to bring forth results in your life, you have to receive all of it. As long as you block out parts of scripture that make you uncomfortable you will never experience God’s fullness because that area of sin in your life will continue to be a hindrance in your spiritual progress. If there is something in the Bible that you don’t agree with or understand, humble yourself before Jesus and ask Him to help you receive the truth. He can help you.
James 1:21-25 NIV
Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
