One of the things that God has taught me is that how I carry myself during a fast is just as important as praying.

Isaiah 58:3-4 says:

Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours. Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.

When fasting, it is very important to keep our hearts free from sin. God is not only looking for us to give him sacrifice but also walk in ways which please Him. If am in a fast but I have a bad attitude towards someone or I am entertaining other sins in my heart, then my fast was not impactful because sin is hindering my prayers. If such things happen, then one should repent right away and then continue their fast.

Also note, that fasting is not just about going without food but it’s a time of prayer before the Lord. If you have responsibilities such as a job, chores at home or etc., make sure you continue to fellowship with God by taking short prayer breaks or speaking to the Lord as you do your tasks.
