In the book of Lamentations, Jerusalem was destroyed and taken captive by its enemy Babylon because of disobedience to God.
Lamentations 2:14 says:
The visions of your prophets were false and worthless; they did not expose your sin to ward off your captivity. The prophecies they gave you were false and misleading. (NIV)
The prophets of that time didn’t warn people about their sin or the judgment that was coming. In the same way, we need to make sure that we aren’t following teachers of God’s Word who only say what we want to hear.
The truth of scripture is meant to bring correction, and while it might not feel good, it will lead us to holiness and eternal life (Hebrews 12:14)!
2 Timothy 4:3 NIV
For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
