Early in my walk with Jesus, I learned that the secret to a powerful walk with Him is prayer. After some time however, I fell into a trap of becoming legalistic in my prayer life which caused me to decline spiritually. I went from being on fire for Jesus and very passionate about Him, to feeling burdened by my spiritual life. Because of this I began neglecting prayer and I as a result I backslid.
If you struggle with legalism in your prayer life, praying less is not the answer. Instead, continually ask The Holy Spirit to lead your prayer life, and if the problem continues, fast for God to remove your legalistic mindset about prayer. This way The Lord can deliver you and your spiritual life will not suffer.
If you have trouble finding words to pray, one of the things which can help is praying in scripture, as well as asking The Holy Spirit to give you words to pray. Also, do not think that prayer is limited to a particular place and time. The Bible tells us to pray without ceasing, which means we can spend time with Christ throughout the day by talking to Him while we carry out our responsibilities.
Colossians 4:2 NIV
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
Ephesians 6:18 NIV
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
