In the Bible we read about a rich young ruler who wanted to follow Jesus, but walked away when he was asked to give up his possessions (Matthew 19:16-22). In another part of scripture there was a fisherman named Simon Peter who when asked to follow Christ left his fishing net and gave up his job to become Jesus’ disciple (Matthew 4:18-20).
Both of these men wanted to follow Jesus, but only Simon Peter continued with Christ in His ministry. Do you know what the difference is between Peter and the rich young ruler? Obedience.
We may want to follow Christ, but it’s not until we obey Him that we’re truly His disciple. If there are areas you struggle obeying God, ask Him to help you. You can also fast about those difficult areas/besetting sins.
Luke 6:46
“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?
Matthew 16:24
“Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.”
